Zagg Invisible Shield Follow Up – BodyGuardz Review

not so invisible

I will start by saying this, DO NOT BUY THE ZAGG INVISIBLE SHIELD FOR IPHONE! It is a complete waste of money!

I received my zagg invisible shield on Febuary 10th, and recount my installation horror story here: http://www.dailyrelevance.com/iphone/zagg-invisible-shield

Im not one to completely disown a company, however, this has to be the worst product you could ever put on your iphone. Here are just a couple of things that Zagg needs to seriously improve on before they ever consdier selling their invisible sheild to anyone!

Installation was the most frustrating experience I have gone though in a while! Now, I can understand that it was my first time and that it does require a bit of a delicate touch, however, should it really be that hard?

Decreased touch response on the screen. I brought this up with zagg support and they said “You’ll get use to the change in touch performance. It’s not hindered, just different.” What is that supposed to mean? Why would I want my touch performance to be different than if I had nothing on the screen at all? To their defense, i never did call customer support. But I was at this point fed up with the product and going to just live with it.

Now if those were the only problems with the product I think that I would be OK, but obviously they are not!

The cover becomes severly discolored! I own a white iphone and after only 2 months with the zagg “invisible” shield it had become anything BUT invisible! Take a look at the above picture after removing the back cover.

I think you are also all asking yourselves, why are the corners black? Well to my next point, that is lint collected on the corner guards that became semi-unglued and collected all my pocket lint for me. Also it is stuck onto a white background so you can get an idea as to how yellow it became. You might think to yourself that I did something wrong or I left it out in the sun. Well i’m not the only one with this problem! When I took it to a competitor’s cart in the mall, they had a drawer full of zagg invisible shields that had the same or worse yellow discoloration and “orange peel effect”, which is what the guy called it.

The orange peel effect is where the invisible shield is no longer flat and smooth, it actually starts to ripple and become deformed?!? ruining your view of the display.

What should you buy, if the zagg is so incompetent and discusting? I will have to give a little plug to my installer at the Tysons Corner mall. Its a competitor of zagg called BodyGuardz and I highly recommend their product.

How do they solve the above problems that zagg has not?

First, they offer installation services for free! Thats all this guy does, he installs the protective cover on your phone and he does it right without any of the headache that you would have if you installed it yourself!

Second, if this thing does orange peel, discolor, or start to collect pocket lint i’ve got someone I can go to. He also guaruntees that they have fixed these problems in their phone and with professional installation i doubt the corners are going to be peeling off too.

I took a blurry photo of the guys information that installed my bodyguardz onto my iphone but once I get home I will post all his information. Its been a week now and I havn’t had any complaints. However, like the zagg product I will post a follow up after a month or so to see how the body guardz for the iphone performs.

If any of you are near the Tysons Corner mall in virginia, stop by the BodyGuardz cart right in front of the L.L. Bean store and they will take care of you! I told him that I would referr anyone I could and make sure that everyone would steer clear of the Zagg invisible shield.

  1. What you did not say, and I think it is only fair to mention is that you could have removed, washed and re-applied it. Poof! No more pocket yuck on the corners.

Also, Zagg will replace the Invisible Shield if you send in the old one. Did you actually call and ask for a replacement?

How is your BodyGuardz holding up?

My company has 12 iPhones with the Invisible Shield installed and about a dozen MacBooks. I love them, and they have no doubt protected many iPhone displays from breaking when dropped.

  2. I use BodyGuardz as well. I have had my same Guard on my phone for 7 months and have never had a problem with it. The product is amazing!

  3. I was so frustrated with installing the Zagg invisible shield on my iphone. It is not easy to install, nor invisible. As for their lifetime guarantee, I looked over their website after repeated attempts to install the shield, distorting it and dirtying it up in the process, thinking maybe I should start with a fresh, new, undistorted one. They only will send you a replacement if you bought it from their website. I, unfortunately, bought it at a retail store (you’d think they would indicate that on the packaging right next to where they say they give you a lifetime guarantee). Then, they have a system where you have to give them a credit card number and if they don’t receive your old one they charge you the full price of the new one, instead of just the unknown shipping and handling charges they apply…..I threw mine in the garbage…I’ll go buy a cheaper, invisible replacement with no lifetime guarantee, thank you.

  4. I have not had the chance yet to post a follow-up on the bodyGuardz but its been long enough since its install that I should probably let you know how its gone thus far.

I did try getting in touch with the people over at Invisible shield and never really got a straight answer, Plus I didn’t want to go through the crazyness of trying to install it myself again!

Has anyone else had any problems with their body guardz iphone cover?

  5. True, I’ve been asking around about how paying $50 for this was worth the trouble. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think skins transparent skins are a bad idea but you have to have quality as well as a sense of value for buck. I had a bad experience with BG and I’ve long since bought the same thing for 6$ from gadgetshieldz. They even give ya free shipping. Is there a reason why I should be paying so much more for the same stuff?

  6. Yes My iphone covered with Zagg invisible shield and now it’s discolored!!! I paid at the Valley Fair Mall for $35, They charged for installation. If it’s later fall off, you can go back and pay $5 for installation but not the shield since you already paid. How ridiculous it is. And now my iphone is discolored. Bad Bad decision.

  7. I am extremely unhappy with your product. I purchased both a Samsung Focus and a Zagg invisible skin at the AT&T store in my neighborhood. My first attempt to apply the product to my Focus was a disaster and the AT&T store would not accept it for a refund, so I returned the Zagg skin via their website for a replacement. After receiving a replacement in in the mail, I dropped it upon application for a second time, and the sticky side came into contact with a piece of paper, which ruined it. “Easy Installation” on the front of the product is false advertising. I can’t believe such a sensitive product does not come with at least one extra backup for accidents upon application, especially for $30. I’ve never felt so cheated in my life. I don’t know what else to say or do.. I’M FRUSTRATED!!!

  9. Both products are horrible, and costly too. I wouldn’t wanna waste $20+ on some useless piece of plastic. What are all those products like Bodyguardz worth? You struggle with the installation and it doesn’t even make your iPhone ‘shine’ like how they say it would. But I have to admit, for all my skepticism of protective films, I think I can exempt Gadgetshieldz from the others. I mean it actually works, and the installation process isn’t a brain twister, you just zip through!

  10. I disagree totally, if you follow the instructions and even watch the you tube videos they offer for the install its not that hard. Also the coloring is due to you the dirt from you hand, face pretty much your daily life. You should be glad the ZAGG Shield saved the color of your phone. ZAGG Also offers a lifetime warranty with product so if you ever are unhappy with the look you simply go to a zagg store or online and you get a new shield FREE. OH you can also pay ZAGG a whopping $5.00 per side to have a guaranteed install on your device. ZAGG ISTHE BEST PRODUCT ON THE MARKET!!!!

    1. The product in this review is from 2009 and was for the iPhone 3g. I will say that I did get it replaced a few times for free without any issues. But it only took a few months and the cover was bad again each time. Also I did have the subsequent covers installed by the Kiosks at the mall.
